7 Signs Your Galvanized Pipes Need Replacing
If your home was built before 1970 — and most of Glendale and Burbank was — there's a good chance galvanized steel pipe is quietly failing behind your walls. Here's how it announces itself.
From the 1920s through the late 1960s, galvanized steel was the standard water supply pipe in American homes — which happens to be exactly the era when most of Glendale and Burbank was built. 1. Low Water Pressure Throughout the House
Not one weak faucet — every fixture, everywhere, all the time. When the whole house runs weak, the problem isn't a clogged aerator or a bad valve; it's the pipes themselves, narrowed from the inside by decades of rust. 2. Pressure Drops When a Second Fixture Opens
The classic: you're in the shower, someone opens the kitchen tap or starts the washing machine, and your shower dies to a trickle. One pinhole leak is a repair. The second and third within a year or two are a pattern — and the pattern always accelerates, because every leak means the pipe wall has rusted through from the inside. Each patch buys months, not years, and the next pinhole is already forming somewhere you can't see, over a ceiling or inside a wall you'd rather not open twice.
5. Visible Corrosion or Bulging at Joints
Go look at the exposed pipe under your house, in the garage, or where the line enters the water heater. Rust blooms, white or greenish crust, flaking scale, or a swollen "knuckle" at a threaded joint are all signs the pipe is failing from the outside in as well as the inside out. Threaded joints are the thinnest, most vulnerable points in a galvanized system — where the pipe walls were cut, they corrode first.
6. The Water Heater Fills Slowly
A water heater fed through half-closed pipe struggles — long recovery times, weak hot-water flow at fixtures, and sediment from the supply line collecting in the tank. Homeowners often replace the water heater and are surprised when nothing improves. If a brand-new heater didn't fix your hot water problems, the galvanized pipe feeding it is the likely culprit.
7. Brown Stains in Sinks, Tubs & Fixtures
Rust-colored staining under a drip, in the toilet tank, or around the tub drain means your water is carrying dissolved iron day in, day out — even when it runs clear enough to look fine in a glass.
