What Glendale & Burbank's Hard Water Does to Your Plumbing
That white crust on your shower head isn't just cosmetic. The same minerals are coating the inside of every pipe in your house — and in older homes, they've been at it for decades.
If you've ever scraped chalky deposits off a faucet aerator in Glendale or wiped stubborn spots off glassware in Burbank, you already know our water is hard. What you can't see is more important: everything that crust is doing on the outside of your fixtures, it's also doing on the inside of your pipes, your drains, and your water heater. What Is Hard Water, Exactly?
"Hardness" is simply the concentration of dissolved minerals in your water — mostly calcium and magnesium picked up as the water passes through rock and soil. The water is perfectly safe to drink; hardness is a plumbing problem, not a health problem. Minerals come out of solution and stick to surfaces whenever water is heated, slows down, sits, or evaporates. That's why scale shows up first on shower heads, around faucet spouts, and inside kettles — and why the two places it does the most expensive damage are water heaters and aging pipes.
How Mineral Scale Builds Up Inside Pipes
Scale formation is a compounding process. A microscopically thin layer of calcium carbonate bonds to the pipe wall. That layer is rougher than the pipe was, so it slows the water at the surface and gives the next layer something to grip. Each deposit makes the next one easier. Over years, the smooth bore of a pipe becomes a rough, narrowed channel — and in the worst cases we open up, a pipe that started life with a 3/4-inch opening is passing water through a hole the size of a pencil.
You feel this as symptoms that creep in so slowly you adjust without noticing: showers that take longer to run hot, pressure that sags when two fixtures run at once, a washing machine that fills at a trickle. None of it happens overnight, which is exactly why homeowners rarely connect the dots until a plumber shows them a cut section of pipe.
Why Galvanized Pipes Take the Worst of It
Here's the part that matters most if your home was built before about 1970 — which covers a huge share of Glendale's 1920s–60s housing and Burbank's postwar bungalows. Galvanized steel pipe corrodes from the inside as its zinc coating wears away, leaving a rough, rusty interior surface. That roughness is a perfect anchor for mineral scale. Corrosion creates grip, scale builds on the corrosion, and the two feed each other until the pipe is choked nearly shut.

Hard Water and Slow Drains: A Decades-Long Squeeze
Scale doesn't only build up in supply lines. Drain pipes collect it too, especially where hot, mineral-heavy water from dishwashers, showers, and laundry flows daily. On its own, scale in a drain rarely causes a clog — but it narrows the pipe and roughens the wall, so grease, soap scum, and hair snag and accumulate far faster than they would in smooth pipe. A drain that used to shrug off normal use starts clogging every few months.

What Hard Water Does to Your Water Heater
Your water heater is where dissolved minerals most love to come out of solution, because heat accelerates the process. Scale settles on the bottom of a tank heater as sediment, and that layer acts as insulation between the burner and the water. The heater runs longer to do the same job, your gas bill creeps up, and recovery times stretch out. If you hear popping or rumbling from the tank, that's steam bubbles forcing their way through the sediment blanket — a classic hard-water symptom.
Tankless heaters aren't immune either; scale coats their heat exchangers and can trigger error codes or shutdowns. Regular flushing helps both types, but in our water, an unmaintained tank heater can lose years off its expected life.
Does a Water Softener Help? An Honest Answer
Sometimes — but it's not a cure-all, and we'd rather you hear the tradeoffs from a plumber than a sales brochure.
- Salt-based softeners genuinely remove hardness and stop new scale from forming. They also add ongoing salt costs, use extra water for regeneration, and are regulated in parts of California because of brine discharge — check what's permitted at your address before buying.
- Salt-free conditioners don't remove minerals; they change how minerals crystallize so less scale sticks. Results are real but more modest, and they vary with water chemistry.
- Neither one removes existing scale. A softener protects the plumbing you have from today forward — it does not restore pipe that's already narrowed.
- Periodic maintenance still matters: water heater flushes every year or two, and hydro jetting for drain lines that have started to slow.
When Scale Damage Is Beyond Cleaning
There's a point of no return. Once galvanized pipe is heavily corroded and scaled, no softener, descaler, or cleaning restores it — the corrosion and the mineral buildup have become the structure of the pipe wall. The honest fix at that stage is replacement with copper or PEX, which resist scale the way smooth, non-corroding materials should. It's a bigger job than a service call, but it permanently ends the cycle of fading pressure, rusty morning water, and pinhole leaks.
